PERSPECTIVES ON LISTENING

2017 BIOSPHERE SOUNDSCAPES INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP AND SYMPOSIUM

WATCH THE LIVE STREAM HERE

December 7-9, 2017
Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia

In December 2017, Biosphere Soundscapes and the Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre, Griffith University are hosting “Perspectives on Listening” an international symposium and workshop bringing together an interdisciplinary group of researchers to explore the role of sound in understanding place and environmental changes. "Perspectives on Listening" will introduce the interdisciplinary possibilities of acoustic ecology and highlight emerging fields including ecoacoustics. The event features keynotes from Steven Feld (USA) and Monica Gagliano in addition to panels, research presentations, live performances, immersive installations, sound walks and field trips across the rainforests of the Sunshine Coast and aquatic ecosystems in Noosa Biosphere Reserve.

STEVEN FELD - KEYNOTE

Leading American ethnomusicologist, anthropologist, and linguist Steven Feld will present the 25th anniversary edition of ‘Voices of the Rainforest’ – his composition of a day in the life of the Bosavi rainforest and Kaluli people in Papua New Guinea. The work has touched audiences concerned with ecological integrity, interspecies art, and cultural survival, and remains in popular circulation through Smithsonian Folkways.

MONICA GAGLIANO - KEYNOTE

Monica Gagliano is a Research Associate Professor in Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Western Australia where she has pioneered the brand-new research field of plant bioacoustics by demonstrating for the first time that plants emit their own ‘voices’ as well as detect and respond to the sounds surrounding them. Her research is radically transforming our perception of plants and more generally, Nature.

Saturday December 9th, Noosa Biosphere Reserve (Boreen Point)

Boreen Point is located approximately one-hour north of Maleny (two hours north of Brisbane).

The closing event will happen on Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi Country at Boreen Point over Lake Cootharaba in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve 5:30pm-7:00pm on Saturday December 9th. Noosa Biosphere Reserve was the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for the state of Queensland, established in September 2007. It was the location where Biosphere Soundscapes was founded in 2011 and has hosted various acoustic ecology programs since inception in 2007.

This will be an informal and relaxed gathering with a dusk sound walk, hydrophone listening in the lake and a
Welcome to Country and performance from Brent Miller (Gubbi Gubbi Dance).

There is a group booking for 7:30pm at the Apollonian Hotel (19 Laguna Street, Boreen Point) for delegates who wish to stay for dinner. For delegates staying overnight, we have recommended booking one of the affordable holiday rentals in Boreen Point. There are also many accommodation options in Noosa which is a 20-minute drive.

Those that stay overnight in the area are welcome to join Leah Barclay and Andrew Skeoch for a dawn recording session the following morning on Sunday December 10 (in Boreen Point).
