BIOSPHERE SOUNDSCAPES MASTERCLASSES

MASTERCLASSES

The Biosphere Soundscapes masterclasses are one day intensive programs designed to engage with specific aspects of the biosphere reserve and tailored to specific community groups or organisations. Our masterclasses have been delivered by some of the major figures of sonic art including Francisco Lopez (Netherlands) and Andrea Polli (USA).

The overall Biosphere Soundscapes masterclass programs showcases the local and global value of biosphere reserves as learning laboratories for sustainability and highlight projects and innovative ideas uniting the conservation of biological and cultural diversity. These immersive experiences can also be delivered as lectures streamed live from this website or delivered in an academic context in universities across the world. In addition to showcasing Biosphere Soundscapes, the masterclass modules focus on local issues exploring community engagement, partnerships and projects, while the concluding modules focus on global issues and introduce opportunities for knowledge sharing, virtual collaborations and the future possibilities of creative technology in responding to climate change.

Our Biosphere Soundscapes masterclasses included the following programs in 2015-2016:
  • UNECO Biosphere Reserves as Learning Laboratories for Sustainability
  • Creative Approaches to Ecosystem Monitoring with Acoustic Ecology and Bioacoustics
  • Connecting Communities with Creative Technology in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves
The Masterclass content was developed by Biosphere Soundscapes director, Dr Leah Barclay, who has lectured at universities across the world. In 2015, we launched a parallel program under the name Biosphere Lab, a masterclass education pilot developed by Dr Leah Barclay, UNESCO and CONNECT Asia that was successfully delivered across the Asia-Pacific region.

Our 2017 masterclasses will occur in Australia, Cambodia and India.

Biosphere Soundscapes is a virtual initiative working with UNESCO Biosphere Reserves across the world. We welcome collaborations with biosphere reserves and invitations to host masterclasses. Please use this contact form to enquire about hosting our programs and joining our database to be notified when Biosphere Soundscapes is in your region.

Biosphere Soundscapes is an interdisciplinary research project working in collaboration with multiple organisations and institutions across the USA, South America, Australia, Europe, India, Indonesia and Cambodia. The project was endorsed by the UNESCO MAB Program in 2013 and is currently based at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we are conducting this research and pay our respect to the Elders, past, present, and emerging and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
